Human Cheek Cells

Gently scrap the inside of your cheek (inside your mouth) with a dull tooth pick and spread the “goo” on a glass slide. Make a solution of 0.05% Methylene blue (stains nuclei) and 0.05% Eosin (general cell stain) and add a drop to “goo”. I would have the teacher mix the stain and apply it. The stains make the cells easier to see with bottom illumination (hard to see without any stain). Best to look at the cells with 200x. The cells do not look spectacular with this microscope, but kids have fun looking at their own cells.

Best viewed with 200x magnification and bottom illumination.
